If your debit card has a Visa or MC logo on the front, you can use that for shopping online. Or you can buy a prepaid MC or Visa, but these cards charge a lot of hidden fees that eat away at your balance. I'd say that the safest way is to transfer money into Paypal, at least it is free and they do not share any of your personal information with the company that you're shopping with so identity thieves cannot steal your info and spend your money. You can even request a Paypal debit card to use online and in stores.

I would suggest not using your debit card information. ID theft is huge right now. I have been a victim of ID theft and it is not fun, it takes years and years to clean up. This was 6 years ago it happened, and because of the type of work i do i have to pass an extremely extensive background check. This previous ID theft causes problems and has even caused delays in my employment because if the information mix up. I often have to write a statement of what happened and have it notarized before i am allowed on the job site. Cleaning up the credit report is difficult after there has been an ID theft.
My suggestion is to go get a prepaid Visa or Mastercard. They are awesome, i have been doing all my online shopping with a prepaid credit card for the last few years. If someone steals your prepaid acct. info, they will only be able to steal the balance on the card at the moment, not all your bank account information and future deposits you make to your card. Remember, you depend on your checking account to live, so use a prepaid credit card for travel and internet purchases. They work exactly the same as a normal credit card, everyone accepts them. Simple to sign up, simple to reload, and best of all, no monthly interest! You can refill the balance as needed. These cards can be found at most grocery stores and Drug Stores. You get your account number instantly so you can instantly do internet purchases, and in a couple of weeks your credit card shows up in the mail that you can use anywhere visa or mastercard is accepted.

Yes, you include a variety of fund sources when you open a Pay Pal account. For example, you can connect it directly to your checking account, a savings account, a debit card or all of the above.
"You can transfer funds from your checking or savings account to your PayPal account using Electronic Funds Transfer." --Pay Pal Website (link below)
This means you don't have to "deposit" anything really. The funds are just transfered like they would be if you used your debit card anywhere else.

Get a prepaid Visa or Mastercard. Can get them at most check cashing places, many malls sale them as gift cards, some grocery stores carry them. You don't have to even wait to have one mailed to you with your name embossed on it. Just make sure they have online registration that you can register your name and address so you can order from websites that use address verification when approving credit card transactions.
