It sounds like your laptop is so old, it doesn't have USB ports. If this is the case, then it is not worth spending much money on, as it is likely too old to be able to run Windows 2000 or Windows XP, which is now required to have many USB devices work at all.
If you have no option but to use this laptop, check if it has a credit-card-sized slot (or slots) on one of the sides. If so, you can buy a PCMCIA USB adapter. Many stores won't carry this in stock, but most will be able to order it.
But before you run out and buy this, check which version of Windows you are using. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 you will not even be able to use this device to give you USB ports. The operating system (and likely the laptop) is simply too old to support USB.
If you are using Windows 98 Version 4.10.2222 or higher. then you will likely be able to get the PCMCIA USB adapter to work *IF* it supports Windows 98 Second Edition. Be sure that whichever PCMCIA adapater you are considering buying supports Windows 98 Second Edition, in this case.
Also, to properly support the USB adapter you are buying, you should download and install the Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 1. It is a superbly assembled collection of nearly all of the fixes and updates Microsoft has released for Windows 98 SE over the years, and solves the majority of compatibility problem that come up when using newer hardware that supports Windows 98 Second Edition. You can get it from this web site: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP then you will be able to use the PCMCIA USB adapter without a hassle.
Once you have the adapter and its driver installed, you will have one or two USB ports. Should you require more, you can buy a USB hub almost anywhere.

A lot of those technologies, like the mouse and other things are backwards compatible from USB to PS/2, however that flash drive you're using might not be able to do that. If you're using WinXP, you could try to Find New Hardware under the control panel. I know that when I put my drive in, it shows up as a removable drive. Also, if u plug the adapter onto the flash drive and then into the computer, most of the newer drives have a light to show you that it's on. Make sure that the light is on, if not, I'm sorry to say that it might not work at all.

The only thing i can think of is an USB adapter. Does it have drivers with it? Maybe you should try different adapters to see if any would work on your laptop. You didn't mention what OS you have installed on your laptop.

You don`t need PS2-USB Converter
All you need is a USB Distributor (input: USB output: 5-10 USB points)

Go to control panel and click ad hardware. Follow the prompts. If it still doesn't work, try calling customer service for either the adapter or your laptop. One or both should be able to help
