Britain is England ,Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales. As I live outside of the UK, I see this attitude where Britain=England. I think it probably dates back to the time of the British Empire when the English thought they run everyone (much like the Americans now). They're still disillusioned.

Great Britain is the island of Wales, Scotland and England. UK is GB plus the six Irish counties known as Northern Ireland. Ulster has nine counties, the 6 mentioned, plus 3 that are in the Republic of Ireland. The Isle of Man is not in the UK. I didn't know that until I visited there for the first time recently and the mobile phone calls were on International Roaming tariff

Hi you are right Britain does not just equal England it is made up of 4 countries Scotland, England,Wales And Northern Ireland . The cultures are similar now due to media influence and close proximity but Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland maintain their own unique Identity and culture . Northern Ireland is the 6 Counties of Ulster which Britain has maintained instead of giving them back to Eire along with Munster, Lennister and Connaght. Some of the population in Wales,Scotland and Northern Ireland speak their own Celtic Languages. In Scotland and Ireland the two forms of Gaelic are similar. Welsh is related but not as similar, I hear it is more closely related to Breton (Spoken in Britany,France) and Galician (Spoken in Galicia, Spain.)

Britain is a concept held by the English. Very few people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would consider themselves British with the exception of the Loyalists in Northern Ireland.

British Isles>UK>Britain>England

England is part of Britain, and is usually what people think of when they think of Britain, and it most people find it easier to say, too. I usually just refer to the UK to avoid confusion, unless I really mean to refer only to Britain or only to England.

Because 80% of the entire population of the United Kingdom is English, you can't blame foreigners for thinking that Britain and England are synonymous. However, the sirens continually wail from the scots and the welsh whenever they go on holiday because they are called English ! I would have thought from their appearance and behaviour people would not even think they were from the same planet!
