I have experimented with synthetic motor oils for the past couple of years. I like them. I have 257k miles on my 97 cavalier. The extended oil change intervals depend on the oil & the oil filter of your car. If you have a small oil filter, even with synthetic oil, then you can only go 5,000 miles in between oil changes. You have to research it for your individual car. One point you will not see to often is that if you use regular oil & switch to synthetic, the first 3 oil changes you will need to change the oil every 3-4,000. The synthetic oil will clean out your engine & if debris becomes dislodged it "may" blow your engine- odds of that happening are less than 50/50 in my book. Read up & learn more before you do it. I have used- Shell Rotella T synthetic, Royal Purple, Walmart synthetic, Citgo synthetic, Mobil 1, & Amsoil. I think Amsoil is the best but hard to find. Royal Purple is a good value. Shell Rotella T is hands down the best bang for the buck + if you have a diesel or a truck, the Rotella line of oils is the best for you (can be used in gas vehicles also). Check out the links

Yes, you can go longer with synthetic oil. If you pay for someone to change your oil, you will save on the labor due to extended miles between the changes.

The only downside I have ever heard to synthetic oil is that if you have an older car with leaky gaskets, they will leak even faster.

Topping off the oil more frequently in these cases is going to cost you more.

the only time they are worth it is if your car manufacturer says you have to use it for warranty. Corvette, new Cadillac North star, some European cars, Etc.. If you don't have to use it then don't. You still have to change the oil every 5000 miles no matter what type of oil you use. The oil still gets dirty and still loses its additive package.
