Times New Roman and Arial are the fonts most commonly used in the professional world. If you want something that's still professional, but a little more original, I'd go with Georgia, Verdana, or Book Antiqua.

Stick with the basics. Use Arial or Times New Roman. They are the default fonts for a reason: they're easy to read.

This is your choice.
I hear that Secretary General Kofi Annan uses Times New Roman.
I personally like Arial, but have used Times New Roman for quite a bit of publishing work. One author that I know uses Garamond. It's distintive, and the italics stands out more.
