One of the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized access on a wireless connection is to turn off your SSID broadcast. Also, to make a shared access for limited users, you can enable WEP encryption on top of that. Some wireless routers give the opportunity to use more than just one WEP key, so you would keep one secret for yourself and hand out another one to other users that you can change at any time, thus securing your network without impacting yourself.
