I was searching for this answer and I can't find anything about it. I was wondering if any of you know why songs seem to lose their effect after hearing them repeatedly, in a scientific sense (I don't mean like them being overplayed on the radio).

I understand overplaying a song (or repitition of anything) is what causes it to lose its effect, but WHY? What actually happens physiologically? Maybe the reason isn't known on this level?

well like anything else, predictability just gets boring - its human nature - sometimes this can be temporary like if you stop listening to the song for a year or two and then start again, it can bring back nostalgia and then you can like it again...

overplaying a song makes me become sick of it. When i like a song, i try not to listen to it every hour so that it does not become overplayed. Just slow down and stop listening to the same song every minute!

You don't get sick of all songs by listening to them all the time. If the song is really good then you never get sick of it, but if the song is just "ok" then your more then likely to get sick of it. For example I'm completely sick of nickelback, but listen to The Used all the time. It's content and subject matter that effects peoples reactions to songs repeatedly played.

Usually it is songs that we like quickly that we tire of .This is because they lack originality and you have heard it a million times before. This was also why you liked it quickly as it was familiar.
