Pregnancy is most prone to complications in the young (<17 yo) and the older mother (>30 yo)

Also in other specific circumstances

o the mother who has given birth many times (grand multiparity) is at risk

o the mother who has other medical conditions that make pregnancy risky (eg high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease)

It's really from the age of 35.

Plenty of people have babies beyond this age, but this is the age where the amnio tests are offered because of the "risks".

The menopause can start from the age of 40 and that is because our bodies aren't designed to cope with pregancy, birth & rearing a child from that age.

It doesn't mean that the mother would be a bad mother, it's just not advisable. The celebs have brought the over 40 & pregnant thing to light, but they don't have what is known as a normal life, with normal day to day stresses that we have.

There has been much publicity during the last couple of years or so on this subject. The common believe is that once a women reaches late thirties or early forties pregnancy becomes more of a risk as at this time in her life there is a higher risk that she could either miscarry or have a physically deformed baby. This I think is because hormonal changes as part of what is commonly called the change could already be starting.

Generally, doctors suggest more tests and women are considered "riskier" as potential mothers after age 35. Risks of genetic abnormalities are more prominent (such as Down Syndrome or spina bifida) and the risks to the mother are higher after this age as well. Teenagers are also at a higher risk of complications.

35 is considered high risk in the US. All of these ages however are simply guidelines as it depends mostly on the health of the woman. Also, doctors like to run more tests over this age to check for certain abnormalities which has always seemed like a bit of a money making racket to me. Bottom line is don't get hung up on a number, talk to your doctor to determine your specific risk level.

When the baby is due anytime past the date of her 35th birthday, the doc considers the pregnancy high risk. The risk of complications like pre eclampsia and genetic issues like downs syndrome are much higher after this point!
