My grandparents are 74 and 84 years old and reside in Puerto Rico. Problem is they live alone and have nobody to care for them. My grandfather has altzeimers and diabetes and is getting lost and loosing his money constantly. Grandmother has heart condition and can't walk due to a degenerative arthritis. They don't have any one to help them with basics like cooking, cleaning and going to the Dr. or leisure activity. Grandmother is willing to move with me but grandfather is scared of moving someplace new. They have been robbed several times because neighbors know they are alone and vulnerable. Is there any way I can legally become like their "guardian" and try and get them to move even beyond my grandfather's will if Dr. confirms his illness? There aren't many options for elders in Puerto Rico. Unless you are at your deathbed. Any suggestions?

Contact a lawyer, they often do pro bono cases for good causes. You can get them moved here, and your grandfather can be over ridden b/c of his illness. Puerto Rico is part of this country, so its easier then if they lived outside the US. Act now, it sounds like they needed the help of relatives for quite a while now.

Contact Social Services, they are entitled to assistance in their home. Puerto Rico is part of the United States.

What about getting a power of attorney, where you make the decisions, if there are other children maybe they can come up with a solution also, so that the burden is not all placed on you.
I would think that you could talk to their Dr's and see if they can advise you.

I would try to find out if there is any type of government agency there that help the elderly. You can also try their church, Salvation Army, Red Cross and some of the social service organization. Good luck and God bless you for caring about your grandparents. Too many people today don't care about them!

forget that first girl....she is so rude.......
sorry to hear about this incredibly tough situation...you should see if a live in nurse is an option for them- someone will always be there. I wouldnt actually suggest moving in with them, your life will get very hard and let's face it.....they might not be here too long and then you'll have to re-adjust again.

Of course! Go visit the aged P's, get a lawyer - in PR - and have this Guardianship drawn up. It'll cost a bit but we are talking about your grandparents.

Oh gosh I have no good answers, that is such a hard situation for you. I would think that your grandmother at least could get guardianship over him and you could move them both.
I will pray for you and thank you for loving them both so much.
God bless!
