I think you need to have a little chat with him and his teacher to find out why he's so distracted. Does he have problems seeing the board? Is he being put off by other kids he's sitting beside? Does he just not like particular subjects so switches off during that time?

You also have to remember he's only eight. Boys of that age do have problems sitting still for long periods of time. Maybe you should make a star chart so he gets a star every day he does well in class and at the end of the week, if he's been good then he can get a treat.

Ask your son what he thinks would help him concentrate more in school. Perhaps a small incentive like spending more time with you would give him motivation to try harder. Also I think it's very important to involve the teacher. Request to have a meeting with your son and the teacher to figure out the best way to help your son achieve. Also give your son the resources he needs to be a successful learner, make sure he gets a good breakfast, eats snack and has a good lunch. Hunger can lead to being distracted. Also if your son is impulsive or hyperactive give him a squishy ball to hold while his teacher talks. That way he can be playing with something in his hands, but still focusing on the directions. Sometimes children who are distracted just need something to hold or rub to help them stay grounded.

You say,

"PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR TEACHER OR YOU ARE STAYING IN AFTER SCHOOL AND I WILL BE EXTREMELY UPSET IF THAT HAPPENS BECAUSE I HAVE TO PICK YOU UP AND IF YOU HAVE TO STAY AFTER SCHOOL I HAVE TO WAIT SO I'LL BE PAYING TOO FOR WHAT YOU DID, SO DON'T PUT ME IN NO SITUATION WHERE I HAVE TO SIT AROUND AND WAIT BECAUSE THAT IS NOT FAIR FOR ME TO HAVE TO WAIT FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU CAN'T LISTEN TO YOUR TEACHER, SO LISTEN!!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

He'll listen to the teacher after that.
