Im just learning gardening and have been given a alotment to use over the winter months

Turnips/beets winter greens.You say alotment so you must be British.

There is still time to sow cabbage seeds, in small pots or seed trays, and you'd have seedlings ready to plant out in about 6 weeks. Or good garden centres will have young plants around now, and up to October probably. that might be a better idea, then you can just buy them and bung them in!

Hmmmm. Getting the use of an allotment over the winter months isn't exactly a great favour is it?!

Broccoli, cabbage, spinach, swiss chard, lettuce
It all depends on your winter climate. Go check out your local garden shop and ask the associate for advice on what grows best in your area.

MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE

Cool season crops...

Root: beet, carrot, parsnip, radish, turnip.

Stem: asparagus, white potato

Leaf: cabbage, cslery, lettuce, onion, spinach.

Immature flower parts: broccoli, cauliflower, glode artichoke.

Get your Brussels sprouts in in time for Christmas - although you really should have had them on the boil since Easter...!! :-)
