Anything that lies around you is able to influence you. The human being is what it is because of everything that lies arounf him, because of his education. Everything that has an existence(may it be an idea or something concrete and toucheable) is able to influence a human being.

I think that some behavior can be influenced by a book, but usually there is some underlying idea already there when the person reads the book. I believe that a book can then just push that idea for which is already in someones mind, creating action.
I am just talking about behavior and action, but when you bring up the question of whether a book can influence the way we think. There is no doubt that the answer is yes.

Well yes, but these days I'd say that music, magazines, television and movies influence us more. Unless you read a lot of books (which most people don't do these days) you probably won't be influenced by them as much as music, magazines, television or movies. The majority of people watch TV or movies more than they read. It provides basically the same thing though, a view of how other people live their lives (which subconsciously can give people, especially kids, ideas on how to live theirs). It's not necessarily a bad thing but it does happen, we can't help it. We're so immersed in media and popular culture that we don't even notice it.

Hey, Papillon. At this time I am pretty certain that TV and movies. has a much bigger, mostly negative effect on our lives than books do. The TV and movie genres give people something to copy or ape directly, without having to weigh it through. Who wants to read and sort ideas out for yourself when you can just believe and follow what some rich, dumb celeb. or advertiser tells you to do? Thats why I don't watch a lot of TV. I call it cable Codeine.

Yes. Here are my arguments:
Religious texts:
Bible,
Koran,
Torah,
Rig Veda
Text of "nationalism"
Paine's "Common Sense"
B. Franklin's Autobiography
Rags to Riches
Plymouth Plantation
Malcolm X's Autobiograhpy
Texts of political/social change:
Testament of Hope (writings of Dr. Martin Luther King)
Communist Manifesto (writings of Marx)
Intellectual
Freud's "Interpretation of Dreams"
Darwin's "Origin of the Species"
In brief, any time we complain that "the man is keeping us down,"
"that we're discouraged with rampant materialism," that mankind has not evolved sufficiently," "that we wish people would treat us how we want to be treated," "that we're proud or discouraged with our country," "that we applaud the man who rises from the ashes into glory,"- we're thinking or expressing the views of these books. These are just a few examples.

Yes; if you love a book that much, then it is bound to change the way you think and act towards other people. If you spend the time to read a book and it doesn't change your way of thinking or the way you act, then YOU'VE WASTED YOUR TIME.

Yes because of one thing...books are a form of association. And we become whom we associate with; proven fact. Behavioral studies have shown this time and time again, we do become a product of our environment; whether we like it or not.

Of course they do. A well turned phrase or well written story can create a powerful picture in our minds. We react to great writers with emotion and intellect.

Yes I do just as movies do and our environment. We learn about social behavior and relationships just to name a few.
