Slavery was older than the oldest Pharoah andthe Greeks the British were the first abolitionists.Some people say that the British stance on slavery was responsible for the American Civil War although unscrupulous ships captains still ran the Yankee cotton blockade and exchanged for guns.

YES, slavery was in vogue long before Britain existed as a nation.

As for slavery in the Americas, it was Africans who captured their African brethern and sold them into slavery.

No idea. Slavery was introduced into the United States around 1618 by the Dutch. Americans of the time, didn't know slaves existed and they didn't really play a major role until after indentured servants became to expensive to ship over to the states. The Civil War dealt with slavery. The North was completly against it, while the South was all for it. In the South, slaves did all the work on plantations and if the slaves were gone, then no $ for plantation owners. In the North, any person could be asked and interogated if they knew of any runaway slaves...

Britain is seen as being responsible because of its maritime power (effectively its ships were transporting the most slaves [they were doing a triangular course textiles & manufactured goods to Africa, Slaves to North & Central America, Cotton to England]), and the number of slaves taken to the Carribbean to work on sugar plantations. As to whether it was the British (strictly speaking the English) that instigated the traffic, I dont know. (I wouldnt be surprised if the English Colonies insyigatyed the traffic or merely copied the other Europeans (Spain, France & Netherlands)

As others have said slavery has been around for centuries, in fact Thoms Moores book 'Utopia' included the role / purpose of slaves. The ldefeated side in a war were often enslaved by the winners.
