I want to make the tennis team at my high school this year....
I've been playing on-and-off so it's difficult to get back at the game and stay consistent...
how can I improve my skills?

To improve your skills, the only way really is to practice with a good player, and keep on practicing, Also if possible try to get a coach.

I play good tennis and sometimes stop for a while and find it very hard to get back into the game.

What i do is not try to play my top game at first, but to keep it simple and have long rallys. And as time goes on my full swing comes back, power spin etc.

So when you come back keep it simple at first, then gradually build up and get back to your usual game

Hope this helps you :-)

practice does help, but there are other things that you can do instead of going on the tennis courts and practicing, if you don't have time.
Do shadow strokes- go through the right strokes with just your racket with no tennis balls. it is proven to better your game!

Regardless of the situation, you can always work on improving your position on court.

Hitting the tennis ball isn’t so hard, after all. But sometimes we make it more complicated than it needs to be. The most important thing to remember when preparing to make a shot, is to keep it simple. That means keep your head quiet, the less movement the better, and keep your back straight and body in alignment.

There will always be an occasional ball that you have to lunge at or reach for, but in general, you should always be in control of your body position. Your head should never be in front of your shoulders, way in front of your body, or too much in front of the contact point with the ball.

Be careful not to plant your front foot, and shift your weight forward, until you are sure you are in the best possible position to strike the ball. Yes, this is a little more work, but it has great payback.

the problem about on and off practice is that you can't get in a steady groove. i play 5 days a week, but if i miss a few weeks, it's no biggie. just stand at the service line with your hitting partner on the other side and work on developing a steady and smooth stroke for about 15 minutes (work on spins too). then move back to the baseline and hit down the line and crosscourt. after 30 minutes have passed total, play a match with a friend. (warm up your serve first).

the key to improving skills though is making a commitment to the sport. remember fundamentals are most important.

footwork - moving side to side and forward and back
how to improve - do some footwork drills and leg strengthening exercises

strokes - you know what i mean
how to improve - hit regularly at a good pace that you can control. consistency is most important, power comes later.

network - volleys and overheads
how to improve - rally at the net with a friend or against a wall.

touch - how well you control the ball off the racket.
how to improve - try "supercatching" the ball. place the ball on the racket and roll it off into the air. then when it comes down, catch it on your racket without letting it bounce. it should roll down the racket and you should "cup" the ball. like catching a raw egg.

conditioning - your physical strength and endurance.
how to improve - run once in while, hit the weight room (light weight, high reps!!!).

mental game - your level of focus during matches.
how to improve - play a lot of matches, and focus during practice. make sure you have fun and take plenty of breaks so you don't wear yourself out.

make sure you eat well and keep a healthy diet. most important, have fun!

find a wall and beat it aggressively. take plenty of balls and do it for hours day after day. take some water, a snack and put in your time. soon enough it will become natural for you to have to hustle to the ball and make a good stroke. if you can, put a line on the wall for the net and a couple spots in the center to serve to. then before you go home try to bust a ball.....if you can do that you will know you have POWER!
Have Fun:)))

Find someone better than you to practice with.

And when you can't play against another person, practice serving and work on your conditioning!
