Right now all you need is a valid picture id, like a driver's license. If you have a passport it wouldn't hurt to bring it, but if you don't have a passport bring your birth cerificate as a backup. You will be asked where you were born and your birth date, and your reasons for entering into Canada. In 2007 all people crossing the border will be required to have a passport.

I just went in the middle of August. Going in to Canada the border guard didn't ask to see any ID. He just asked the usual questions: Where are you from? Where are you going? Why? and How long? Getting back in the US was a different story. The guard needed to see all of our birth certificates and all of our drivers licenses as well as asking the usual questions. There was a long wait in line coming back probably because most people had to dig their IDs out of their wallets and purses. I had all of our IDs in one large envelope and just handed it all over at once. By the way Canada is in North America so they are Americans too. Some Canadians resent the fact that their southern neighbors use the word "America" when they are asked their country of origin. You should always say "United States" or "US" or "The States" just out of courtesy. Enjoy your trip.

I went to Canada with my birth certificate and ID. I think it is similiar to an American crossing over to Mexico.

If you have a passport, bring it.
If not, bring your birth certificate and photo ID (like driver's license).
Have a fun trip!
