Strokes:
blatant signs include - unable to move one arm or one leg (usually same side if both are affected) - test strength and coordination of the arm/leg
droop of the face - ask them to smile - the smile will be crooked - a new thing rather than a long standing crooked smile
ask them to puff out their cheeks - they won't be able to hold air in their mouth because of weakness of the mouth muscle(s).
ask them to talk - some stroke patients cannot find the words they want to say. In other cases they may know the words but they may have mouth weakness and difficulty coordinating speech. In still other cases they may lose the ability to understand what you are saying!
