Because you can't show thought in a movie like you can in a book.
Because certain other things lend themselves to print but not to visual portrayal.
Because all movies differ from the books they were based on.

i feel like the directors of the movie didn't truly READ the books, and therefore were not able to capture the essence of the characters and plot the way Peter Jackson was able to in the LOTR...he obviously was a HUGE fan and was able to show a lot of the backstory as well as keep the plot moving and exciting and beautiful all at the same time. =T i was disappointed in all the movies...to me #3 was the best, only because that was my favorite book as well. even then i wasn't happy w/ some parts..can't remember em all tho.
for example, in movie #1: the key room, the potions were changed from the book
#2: the spider parts took way too much time...they are really stretching for "action"
movie #4: the maze was SO lame! at least in the book there were other obstacles other than stupid leafy wall that "ate" you. =T...also the dragon part took Forever. and hermione didn't look That different than usual...and she was supposed to have shrunk her teeth and done a whole bit to look extremely pretty.
the parts that are actually truest to the book are the best parts of the movie; and the parts they glean over or condense end up coming up flat and unfunny. =T the books are way awesome compared to the movies!

Storytelling in a book and on the movie screen are just different. Jo Rowling says on her website (jkrowling.com) that she is ok with the changes that are made.
Some things are disappointing not to see as part of the film -- I was very disappointed that the backstory of the Marauder's Map was not in the 3rd film, and in the first film, they took out Hermione figuring out the potions.
But we have to remember that these movies can't be comprehensive -- lots of children go to these movies, and their attention span isn't as long as a grownup who has closely read the book!

The movies are pretty true to the books. There are things that are left out because of time, I suppose.

I don think its really that different but they did miss out on alot of stuff from the book....due to not having enough time I suppose.
