I just got back from South Africa, right by Johannesburg a suburb called Kempton Park, which is quite nice. The crime rate is very high, in the three weeks i was there 4 people we know where robbed, one at gun point. You just need to be aware of your surroundings , do not drive with the windows down , when in populated areas. Do not look like a tourist and do not flash your money around. I was very scared when I went, because I had read on line about the crime rate in South Africa. It is a fabulous place, with so many things to see and enjoy. I had a wonderful time, but just kept aware of my surroundings always. Have a safe, wonderful trip, I am sure you will love it.

Its safe over here if you use your head and don't walk the streets with a camera hanging around your neck. (Trust me, tourists do that). The crime is no worse than danger spots in major US cities. Apart from the crime, there is absolutely nothing unsafe about South Africa.

Visit www.crimexposouthafrica.org and /or www.southafricaiscrap.blogspot.com and you can read just how dangerous that place is. If you do decide to go be very, very careful all over for nowhere is safe. Statistically more people were murdered in South Africa than died in the Israeli/Lebanon conflict over the same time period so that should give you a good idea.

I have also seen reports of rising crime in South Africa. But I think tourists are safe. You just need to be alert and careful. If you go, here is some information handy for your safety:

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and have all my life. I have never once been a victim of crime! I love Jhb and so will you. The centre of Jhb is terrible and needs a bit of uplifting but othewise it is wonderful! Yes, there is crime in Jhb and a lot of people say the most crime is in the centre of Jhb. Just be careful, dont act like a tourist and you'll be fine! Dont be afraid, trust me you'll be fine!! Its not as bad as what everybody makes it out to be. You'll only experience the truth of Jhb if you go there. And trust me, i wouldnt be living in Jhb if it was as bad as what everybody makes it out to be!! lol...

What people don`t realise is that SA is a huge place. And that Jo`burg is often like a different country to Capetonians.
It`s also sad that foreign news only highlights the crime in SA.
If I were to suggest a safe SA holiday I`d say Cape Town.

relax its not a war zone contrary to popular belief. Try not to go to downtown johannesburg that's all.

Keep your wits about you and remember that not all south africans are friendly, you'll be just fine.

PS: bring warm clothing, the weather is perfect here at the moment!

Yeah I believe its not that risky. follow vacationer-friendly places, like in Cape city the V&A Waterfront Mall is important. additionally, stay faraway from the CBD at night. this is rather empty and creepy (different than on weekends while its full of clubbers and drunks). do not force with your abode windows each and each of how down. additionally taxis (those that look like minivans) will value you ridiculous expenses on account which you at the instant are not from right here lol so do not use them. relish your stay!
