They were called TAXI dancers. Why? they were women employed by a dance hall or nightclub, to dance with patrons for a fee. From the fact that dancers are hired, like TAXI'S for short periods of time. Thus TAXI GIRL DANCERS.

They had dance hall girls, according to movies I've seen. I thought these were also part of them. They did get paid for dancing with men.

Flappers are similar to what you refer to. They were avergage women who decided they were going to wear short skirts and change their hairstyle.
