Most quality helmets today will have removable liners in them. In most cases they are held in place by industrial Velcro and require a bit of work to get them out, but check with the manufacturer to confirm your helmet’s construction.
If your helmet is one that does not allow removal of the liner, you’re best bet is to clean it with a soft bristle brush or wash cloth and a little liquid detergent mixed with water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before donning the helmet again. Standard street helmets are designed to withstand getting wet so rinsing will be no problem.
If you decide to speed the drying process (not a bad idea to help fight mildew), use a small fan or blow dryer with no heat. The heat can damage the inner structure of the lining if applied for long periods of time.
Good luck and keep wearing that helmet. :-)

Please watch out the other washing method is not correct. Helmets need replacing more ofter than you think about 5 year in the best of conditions If you drop a helmet from 4 ft onto hard surface it is damaged you cannot see it but it is.

If it's really bad you could take a small amount of laundry detergent and a scrub brush & the helmet over to the sink and spray inside it with the dish sprayer nozzle and scrub it out... Or you could just try putting the whole helmet through the dishwasher. It will take a couple of days to fully dry out though.

Depends on the design of the helmet. My current one has a removable liner. I just unbutton it and throw the liner in the washing machine.
If it's not removable, your best bet would be to hand-wash it with dish soap and water.

DON'T put it in the dishwasher. I don' t think helmets are safe for protecting your head anymore if they get wet.
