I can see pros and cons to it but i think everyone should do some volunteer work once in a while just to help other people that may not be as fortunate as you are. There are a bazillion organizations and a bazillion causes that need volunteers and it is a great way to meet like minded people.

The down side is that it may expose you or your student to some not so pretty sides of life like the homeless and outbursts of violence are always a likelihood when working with lower socioeconomic folks. One thing i always keep in mind when I try and help people is this, "No good Deed goes unpunished". I have fallen into that several times and it makes it harder for me to go back and help again.

And as far as teaching sensitivity, tolerance, patience and maybe other things, I think it might also backfire if you do have a bad experience and make you extremely prejudice towards other people in those circumstances. It can be like sticking your hand into a hot fire and getting burnt badly. You will have certainly learned not to put your hand into the damn fire but you also may associate all fires with bad things. It is a double edged sword in that respect.

That's something good idea, this way a student will learn social responsibilities at a younger age and be prepared to the real world as it's not an easy place to end up with out knowing what's to be expected of you.
As for voluntary work sure why not, there's a lot to learn there too.
Learning without getting paid isn't the issue here but learning something important is the issue and to volunteer is giving of yourself to something that will benefit others as well as yourself.
Students now have an opportunity to better themselves before they go out into the real world so I'm in favor of this for students. Do yourselves a favor and do it because to join is part of life and you really want the best out of life don't you.
The disadvantages are none, only advantages if you really apply yourself.

The advantages, besides the fact that it looks good on college and job applications, are that it will expose you to a variety of people of types whom you might not meet otherwise.

Meeting and interacting with all kinds of people is a good, eye-opening, mind-expanding experience. It will teach you sensitivity, tolerance, patience and maybe other things, too. You will learn and gain from it as much if not more than what you'll give out.

When you're done school you want your resume to be well-rounded. In otherwords, it's best to have some paid job experience, some volunteer experience, and some school activities (ie sports).
