Well not only girls wear makeups.
Celeb's that are guys wear makeup too. They dont wear like eyeshadow & eyeliner but they do wear airbrush makeup or like a foundation or powder so that it will appear that they have beautiful & perfect skin.

actually in ancient egypt people first started wearing make up for medical reasons, the chemical they used kept bacteria away from their eyes and therefore prevented eye infection trachoma, that is still prevalent in africa and blinds many people every year. anyway, through all periods of human history, make up was sometimes worn by only guys, sometimes by only girls and sometimes by both sexes. as for a lot of cultures make up as primarily ceremonial meaning, you'll probably find some patriarchal societies where it is even restricted to men. looking around me in 2006 western europe i dare say we are beginning to live through a phase when make up is acceptable for both genders again, like it was in the 18th century. a bit of eyeliner on a guy is SO sexy... *slobber* ;-)

Well, that's like asking why only men were the first ballerinas and now, mostly women are. It's just a matter of preference.
