yes, it means clever little techniques that people in a particular line of business or area of endeavor know about, but most people don't

for instance, a plumber might tell you that before you try RotoRouter, stick a garden hose down the drain and seal it in with a rag and turn the hose on, it might clear your plugged drain

he might say, "thats a little old trick of the trade"

that may not be a real good example but you get the idea
a little "trick" that makes things easier or better or successful that most people wouldn't know but the old guys "in the trade" would

sometimes it has the implication of something that is a little shady, not quite done right, not quite up to par, but not always

in your business or hobby or whatever there are probably some little "tricks of the trade" that you could tell somebody better way to do something

'Tricks of the trade' are usually things you learn along the way while doing a certain job. For example, my dad used to clean pools.... He made his job a lot faster by squirting dish soap down the middle of the pool. It would break the turgor pressure and separeate the film across the top and the stuff floating on the surface would move to the sides of the pool, making it easier to pick up. His tricks were shortcuts that made him more efficient. Is that what you're looking for?
