Windows NT is OLDER than Windows 2000. If you are using Windows NT Version 4, it's not so bad. But Windows 2000 is much easier to configure and add hardware too.
But Windows 2000 works better if you have 256MB of memory or more. It also needs about 10GB of hard drive space. So if your OLD RIG has Windows NT, it is really getting OLD. I would not spend any money on it... Plan on retiring it when it gets 8 years old. Someday, it will DIE.

Windows NT 3.0 was actually IBM's first attempt at a business version of Windows, previously you had only AIX ( a version of Unix) to play with, then NT 4.0 was brought out as the Business offering instead of the Home Users Windows 98 (NT stands for New Technology) and was a true 32 bit system, then Windows 2000 was born (with Windows M.E. as the home offering), but the problem was that a lot of 2000's extra functionality lay on the file server, not the PC, so was not so good in the stand alone version for a home user.
Finally Windows XP arrived with Home and Professional Versions, the highest at the time was Windows XP Professional Corporate - this version did not have to be registered to activate, a company bought 'X' amount of licenses and recorded the serial numbers of the PCs that were using a license, this allowed a company to replace PCs yet not have to worry about keep re-registering each PC.

They are two very different systems. NT has been around longer 2000 was a stop gap. Depending on what you want to use the PC for each is very different.
