1GB = 1024MB
1GB = 1024 x 1024KB = 1048576KB

1 GB iS 1024 MB
1 GB is 1024 x 1024 KB
1GB is 1024 x 1024 x 1024 B
i.e. 1 GB is 1073741824 bytes

1 char is 1 byte

so 1073741824 char

one billion characters.
because, assuming

1B=1 character

1000 B= 1 kB
1000 kB= 1 mB= 1000 x 1000 B
1000 mB= 1gB= 1000 x 1000 x 1000 B

which = 1 000 000 000 B.
its only an approximation, though,
