Because Crystal is more pure than glass which can be made with just about any kind of sand and enough heat. In addition, crystal has lead (chemical symbol: Pb) added to the mixture which makes it heavier than a similar amount of glass and adds to it's unique qualities.

B/c crystal contains everything glass does but adds a compound of led.

It is more expensive as they add certain things into the glass while it is being made, giving it a more "shine". Similarly coloured glass can be more expensive than "normal" glass depending upon which chemical has been added to the "mix".

Glass is crappier. Plus when you moisten your fingertip and run it around the top of a crystal cup it hums. Yay for hummers.
