Khus screens are made out of plant roots that are mildly fragrant and will hold moisture. The air passing through the damp screen lowers the room temp and adds a mild fragrance. In tropical climates, this has been a wonderful way to cool without electricity.

It is very similar to a swamp cooler , in either case u will get an absorption of 60 calories for each cubic centimeter that is evaporated. It is the refrigeration effect that u get with the evaporation of most liquids.

Because the water cools the air as it evaporates. It's the same thing as a 'swamp' cooler.
