NASCAR had it's origins in the southern states when ex rum runners would get together and race their modified cars. Most early racers were rednecks who are mainly indigenous to the south. Today, Nascar racing is big business, having crossed over the sports fan base. There is talk of going international into Mexico and Canada.

A lot depends on your definition of redneck.

Although NASCAR has gained some celebrity status it's still a sport that builds from Saturday Night Dirt Track racing up to Nextel Cup ( still can't get used to that name), not many sports involve that many levels of fans or athletes ( check the training schedule of pit crews and tell me it's not athletic in nature)

No, it's not. I'm a Nascar fan, and not a redneck. I live in New York and have never lived in the south. It is probably true that a lot of people that would be considered rednecks watch the sport, but a lot of other people do too.

And to Mr.Fireman4u, just because someone is not a redneck does not mean that they are not true fans of the sport. Nascar is a sport revolving around Cars, their drivers, the pit crew, etc., and you don't have to be a redneck to appreciate or like any of those things.

If you're calling Nascar a redneck sport, then you're calling me a redneck, which I am not. Nascar is not a redneck sport. It is a sport that anyone can enjoy and a great sport for a family to watch together.

No, Nascar is not a ******* redneck sport. I myself am a major Nascar fan...hell my username is after one of my favorite drivers, Martin Truex Jr. I'm a African-American woman who loves to watch Nascar!!

Nascar is a sport that people of all races, ages, sexes,etc. can love. Nascar fans come from all over the world. There is no law that says that you have to be a "redneck" to be a Nascar fan. That is just plain ignorant and idiotic.

Yes, Nascar's roots are deep in the south as that is how Nascar was started but if you look at recent years Nascar is becoming more diverse. There are African-American drivers, female drivers, etc. And there is also a diversity program in Nascar and the president of the diversity program is none other than Magic Johnson. I highly doubt that Magic Johnson would agree to be the president of something that is a redneck sport!!

So...to answer your very ignorant question...NO NASCAR IS NOT A DAMN REDNECK SPORT!

Redneck-yes simply because that is what you get if you don't wear sunscreen while watching the race in Daytona, Bristol or Taladega. Yee-Haw I love me some racin'!

I think NASCAR is trying hard to shake the image of being a redneck sport, but because of its roots and the manner of a good portion of the fans it attracts, I'm sure that image will always exist.
Motor Sports in Yahoo Answers seems to be overpopulated with `NASCAR Bunnies' with little knowledge of the sport, but are infatuated by the modern `Pretty Boy' drivers and, perhaps that's what NASCAR wants.
Interestingly enough the bunnies are usually extremely insecure in their defense of NASCAR and often resort to telling us they aren't rednecks because they live in two-story houses, have an IQ of 130, study psychology and go to college.
I look forward to the Thumbs Down I'm sure to get from the bunnies. :-). Still, I'll treasure the two points for this answer.
