Okay the word race actually means species. What we really mean when we use the word race is ethnicity. Their is only one living species of human, one human race. Humans are a species of mammal like dogs or cats or whales. Yes a whale is a mammal not a fish. Their are no subspecies within the human race. Way before the Internet and cable people were were not aware that there were other people in the world who looked different from them. As world trade increased and new worlds and new people discovered it was realized that humans came in different colors with physical features that distinguished one group from another. And someone somewhere started referring to these other physically distinct groups of people as other races of human. Many scientists disagree with the misuse of the word race. Others have embraced an expanded meaning of the word race which pertains to ethnic groups from certain regions who are genetically related and share some common physical characteristics such as light or dark skin, broad nose, narrow nose and so on.

OK, quick answer: In the migration of the human race across the planet, various groups became isolated from one another and, through interbreeding and selective adaptation, accumulated various physiognomies superficially distinct from each other.

It came from 19th century scientists who were doing the best they could with the tools and techniques available. As we grow in knowledge, we often learn that what we thought we knew was actually wrong or incomplete.

Race is associated with skin color.
Ethnicity is associated with cultural and community identity.
So race simply comes from people's recognition that they don't all look the same.

It's made up. It is just a way for the powerful to perpetuate their belief of being superior. Basically a class system, which exist or has existed in almost every culture.

My guess would be, when man noticed that all people in the world were not like himself. He could use others different traits to categorize him and identify him.
