I want to take my baby (9 months by this time next year) to the Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nevada.

See the site first.

http://www.burningman.com/

I'm thinking there should be no problem, so long as we have ample water/sunscreen/blankies etc., we have a conversion van with AC for shelter during the heat of the day... I'm in good health, eat well and stay hydrated. I don't do drugs, drink, or smoke. I'm looking forward to spending a week in the desert, and am fully aware of "radical survival" techniques. I'm pretty sure it's going to be fine. If any problems arise I won't hesitate to leave. What do most people think of this?

I'm wanting to make this a family tradition. Every year, going to see the Burning Man.

If anyone has ever been or taken their children, please share. Anything I should be specifically aware of?

Hydration is one of my biggest concerns... By 9 months, my babe may still be breastfeeding. How much extra water should I be consuming? I'm already planning for a gallon a day, at least. And, is it wise to give baby a bottle of water in between feedings? I don't want to over-hydrate him, but definitely don't want him dehydrated!

And pblcbox, great idea about entertainment and shelter from noise...

He's definitely the number one priority for "fun-time" and our schedule will be working around him, his sleeping, feeding and playing cycles. I understand that Burning Man is a 24-hour event, so I'm not too worried about "missing out" on anything. Sound suggestions, thanks!

I've been to Burning Man once years ago, in my opinion it's more geared toward those who do "party" in one way or another and as an adult type activity. It was a much smaller event then, it's really grown now so maybe things are different. Not to say you can't be sober or take a baby if you want, but I'd rather go as an adult.

However, 9 months old is a very fun and portable age, not walking yet but not a fragile newborn either, also young enough you don't have to worry about what baby sees (nudity, etc).

Breastfed babies don't need any additional water, even in the desert but a swigs are ok. Bottlefed babies can get a small amount of additional water a day - maybe the amount equal to a normal size feeding 4 to 8 oz - but don't overdo.

I think you would have a great time. As long as you keep him in the shade and stay hydrated you will be fine. I have been the last 6 years and think that a family with a baby could have a great time. There is also a theme camp geared towards families with children. It is called kidsville and is a small community within the city that is a family friendly place to camp. You can probally find a link to it through the burning man website. Email the mayor of kidsville and he could tell you even more.

Just keep in mind that children, especially infants, can be seriously impacted and effected by loud noise, so keep yourselves away from the speakers, okay?

Taking a child isn't a bad thing, at least not in my opinnion. What you've outlined is a sound strategy, but I'd also caution you to make sure that you're keeping your little one entertained and engaged during that time - your own enjoyment now is second-place as a parent.

It is very easy for a baby to become dehydrated. I would not take it at such a young age because of this. If it becomes dehydrated at that age it could become a serious problem very quickly and you not even know it.

Better wait until the tike is a little older.

I see no problem as long as you stay hydrated and try not to be in the heat too much. That really does look like fun!

There is nothing wrong with taking a baby. Do what works for you.

some human beings should be heavily overwhelmed, multiple circumstances in public and placed on public show to be taunted, laughed at spit on and smacked around and then placed them in penal complex.
