Union Square is the best. But for a change you can go to the out of the way areas like China Town. There is also a Little Italy too and other areas, but it just depends on what you are looking for.

For boutiques try Union Street for trendy items (note: it is not the same as Union Square, in fact, it's not even near there). Haight Street also has a bunch of shops if you're more into funky/vintagey things. Chinatown has stores but it's more touristy items.

H&M has a great decision and a few dazzling bargains. they're only off Union sq. on post highway. in case you have in no way been there, this is a fashionista's dream. For classic clothing, head to Haight highway. they have numerous classic boutiques and relaxing drag queen shops. The "well known place" you're relating is probable those 4 colourful Victorian residences considered on maximum of postcards, generic using fact the "Painted women folk."
