My dad's a contracter with his own business here is what he's done:
- get a sign with your phone number on it and put in the yard of anyone's home you are working on. When people get renovations done their neighbors usually follow and want to know who did their work!
- business cards (from kinkos or print yourself on computer with businesscard paper
- place ad in yellowpages
- had t-shirts with the name and phone number on it for wearing to jobs and in public
- place ad in local paper (do so in classifieds, cheaper)
- free: make a listing on your local craigslist (internet based classifieds)
- fliers to put up on community bulletin boards

when you are doing a job, put up a sign and send out postcards to the neighbors to tell them that you are working on their neighbor's house, and to check it out.
Call your old customers back. Ask how it's going. Ask them if you can use their name in marketing. Get it in writing.
Send out a postcard to their neighbors to let them know that their neighbor is happy.

Hi,
You may want to create a special website, and jot down your information for others to see.
Then use many of the advertising methods to generate traffic to the website...
Some listed at: http://www.advertising-world.info/articles_index_1.php
