Clough would arguably be up there, along with the other usual suspects (Shankly, Chapman, Ferguson etc) but this is of course ignoring those who plied their trade abroad whom we know nothing about. The thread in general discounts people who perhaps at the same time as Clough were having just as much success with Italian or Spanish clubs or what have you. Udo Lattek, for example, probably has a far more glittering list of achievements than most but nobody here would consider him since, frankly, they've never heard of him since all these titles came when managing German clubs.

Just something to bear in mind when thinking about the best ever. Clough is definitely a contender, but it might not actually be someone who is British.

When it come to Who was the best manager ever?
There is only 1 who stands a million miles above everyone else, although he never won as much as some managers have done since him Bill Shankley will allways be No1 he made his teams/players play for the people to make the people happy,None of this take the money and run attitude of modern players,Shanks wouldn't have entertained it for 1 minute.
He laid the bricks for what was to become the greatest and most successfull Football Club in the world regardless of how big Man United think they are.

PS i named my Staffy Shankley

Certainly one of the best without a doubt but don't you think a big part of his success was down to the way him and Peter Taylor complimented each other. Once they went their separate ways neither had much success so I guess it was a bad move on both their parts. Sadly missed though and I still recon he would have put the Great back into Britain and their national side had it not been for the hierarchy at F A Headquarters./

As a football manager he was, he may not have won as many honours as a Paisley, Wenger or Ferguson. But he was the best man-manager, nearest to him in the current time is Martin O'Neill.

He was a brillant and manager that spoke his mind, he should of been englands manager and we would of won the world cup again, okay he did drink alot after forest got rid of him but he brought forest up from the bottom to the top and alot of other mangers have not done that. He was also fair if he thought his players were cheating he told them.

He was a decent manager from the old regime of managers. In my own personal opinion there have only been 3 really great managers. From Liverpool it was Shankly and Paisley and although it kills meto say this from the scum Fergie

He knew alot about football but more importantly he knew alot about people...always remember him saying on TV about half-time team talks to players who were having a poor game ...he said that there were those players who needed shouting at ..& others who needed their confidence building (shouting at them would make them worse).
He was a sensitive man who put up a "front" to others.
He could not be beaten regarding his knowledge of the game, man management skills etc etc. I can only think of one who maybe equalled him & that was Bill Shankley.

It was his abrupt nature that made the man and probably cost England the best manager they never had. I also think Ron Saunders was another genius

His record was pretty hit & miss. So, no he wasn't a great manager.

If the question was, "was he a great character?" then I'd have to say he was one of the greatest.
