See if your community (or one nearby) has a Community Theater--you could audition or help with painting sets. You could also check with your local Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts to be a leader, or Sign up with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. If you have any local craft stores, they do classes. Learn to knit or crochet or both! I spend MANY spare hours in front of the TV knitting (always have a bottle of water by my side)

Listen to me VERY closely- Drinking is an addiction that can be very hard to overcome, and I feel where you are coming from.
The very first thing- is to quit. Period.
I was alone in my desire to quit when I was in the Navy. When you are surrounded by alcoholics at every port visit/weekend and you quit on your own, you have to find it within yourself and decide whether you are serious or just kidding yourself. Your social life goes all to hell because you don't go bar-hopping anymore, but you sure do realize that the sunsets are magnificent, the locals are plesant and the food is good.
When you are inside drinking, the beauty of the world around is lost. You don't need to "find" things to do- You need to do things- period.
Your question here is patently absurd. If you were serious, you would have an alternative. This place gives you the excuse of looking for an alternative without the burden of having to commit.
Good luck. I sincerely mean it if you are sincere to yourself.

Being a mentor sounds cool, you could help someone and learn things from them. You could also join a club that promotes positive activities over drinking. The play sounds good too. I hope u succeed in ur goal of quitting drinking.
P.S.-If it doesn't bother you, look in the July edition of Seventeen Magazine for the story of a girl who stopped smoking and the books that helped her w/ her new goal. Just thought I'd add it in there, again, Good luck!!

ok ...
If you need to stop drinking, a sobriety/recovery day program would certainly keep you busy for a while - thereafter you can do much volunteer work at AA meetings around you. AA will always find a job for a person who is looking for one.
Short of any of that, while sober, I'm sure that local libraries and hospitals and service centers need all the unpaid help they can get. Look in your local paper for volunteer opportunities. You'll find them in there, in the classified ads.
(And good luck on the quitting thing!)
