I have an XP and a ME computer. My XP computer is not booting, and I have to restore factory settings. Yet, I want the files on the hard drive of the XP before I restore it. I added the hard drive of the XP to the ME as a slave drive (jumpers are set), and the ME, when it started, did recognize the new driver. However, when I try to see the new drive in "My Computers" I do not see it (I tried in Safe Mode, too, but no luck). I entered BIOS settings to see if the driver is being recognized, and it is. But, once again, I don't see it in the My Computer folder, and I need to get to it in order to get to my files and copy them over.

A little help please. Thanks.

Your XP drive is set up as NTFS, and your ME drive is set up as Fat32.

You will have to get an NTFS reader for your ME machine to see it properly. Or run Partition Magic to convert your NTFS (XP) drive to FAT32.

Please see "source's" for links. Have fun!

On the XP machine do as stated below this will restore your computer but leave all your files on it if you have a cd or dvd writer use a re writable disk which has been formated with nero in cd or other software you use to burn with then copy the files to the formated drive by copy paste or drag and drop then the same on the other computer if you want them there you can then delete then from the formated cd/dvd or leave on it works as a floppy does
Repiar Windows
Use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to re install this works on all windows operating systems

Here's what you need to do. Go back and check all the cables, make sure it's plugged into the slave terminal on the ribbon cable. Check the power plug and recheck the jumpers.

Then reboot and go into command prompt. YOu should arrive at the C:\ prompt. Then key in D:\
If you get an error, key in E:\
until you get to the drive letter.

This is very brief but you should get the idea. If problem continues, let me know.

I haven't used ME before, but every Windows I have used would show the drive if it saw it. Maybe the information on the drive is too damaged for ME to know what it is? Does ME understand NTFS? If not, that could be a problem...

If you can get to the BIOS, you should be able to change the boot order so that it boots from the XP disc first.
