Patent attorneys are expensive, but worth it. Call the U. S. Office of Patent and Trademarks in Gaithersburg Maryland, they may have some ideas on who to trust with your inventive idea.

Yes, John Q. Citizen can do it himself. However, if not done right it would make the patent useless. Do you know how many patents there are? A patent attorney knows what to research, how to research it and knows how to protect you and your invention.

Make sure you get a Patent attorney, not just any attorney. The cost is well worth it, believe me!

You can, but it is a hugely complicated process, which is why those who want to practice patent law have to take a whole separate other patent bar before they can do so.

And if you get it wrong, the costs are going to far exceed the $800 that an attorney wants to charge. BTW, that's cheap for a good patent search.

Get a good lawyer. Keep in mind a patent has an expiration dated. It is not a lifetime protection.
