You made this a little harder by listing your top ten as i believe most will agree with at least some of your anwsers.I do think based on length of time and # 1s you must have The Police. I do agree with Pink Floyd, (animals rocked)I also Believe that even though the original AC/DC was around a short time ( I SAW THEM LIVE) they too where a powerhouse group.Your placement of Zepp and THE BEATLES were dead on..., but I think that maybe I would put the WHO a little closer to # 1. I also must agree on your pick of the original VAN HALEN Eddie is still in the top 10 best ever guitar players, HANDS DOWN!!Now I know this one may sound a little light after my other picks but you must give the EAGLES their due as for a time you could not turn on the radio without hearing a Henley song.I dont know if thats ten but all the flashbacks are makin my brain hurt see ya........

looking at it from cultural influence from the 50's on....
#1 Elvis (I know he's not a band, he integrated and introdued blues/southern gospel into the mainstream - he started it all - can even look at this with respect to the sociological implications of the civil rights movement).
#2 The Beatles
#3 Cream (Eric Clapton responds to Elvis...)
#4 Jimi Hendrix (what else do you say?)
#5 Bob Dylan
#6 New York Dolls (would KISS be here if not for them?)
#7 Iggy Pop (granddaddy to the punk movement)
#8 Blondie (First rap song recorded on a major label - "Rapture" - would Madonna be without Debbie Harry?)
#9 (Tie) Nirvana and Pearl Jam (forerunners of grunge - I would pick Pearl Jam personally for overall contribution)
#10 Electronica (yep-it's a genre.. hard to pick one...Lori Anderson, Kraftwerk etc. they influenced Techno and House which in turn influenced rap and pop, like it or not)

Now then! I would have to agree with Pink Floyd and the Beatles BUT!!! you sorely missed out on BOB DYLAN!!!! I mean the Beatles were singing " She loves you ya, ya ,ya" untill 1965 when they met Bob Dylan and then Bob made fun of John Lennon saying to him " You have the whole world listening to you, and all you can say is she loves you ya ya ya ?!?" and then The Beatles smartened up and started to record music that meant something... SO, Bob should be number 1
