Ok, i've messed up big time! 9 days ago i was floored by a viral infection the point that i couldn't move. I contacted my G.P last Monday but couldn't get an appointment until Thursday, so it took six days to get advice. My G.P gave me a Line to cover me until next Thursday because i was exhausted and had an unusually high temperature. Now, one of my collegues was leaving last night, so i popped down to say goodbye. No bloody managers ever go to these things yet as i was standing, drink in hand, one walked in the door. I am now bricking it. Can they sack me if my G.P has covered me and told me not to go back? Any advice would be well appreciated. And yes, i am an idiot :-)

Oh dear Raymo you seemed to have embarrassed yourself. It's rather sad that you would come on and make a pointless and racist statement as opposed to ignoring my question as you were unable to answer it. To answer your question, yes i live in Scotland but i am not Scottish, so you have not insulted my Cultural background, yet you have in a certain manner showed an attitude that is both narrow minded, presumptuous, arrogant and insulting. For someone who believes in the rights of the individual and is disgusted with stereotypes, racism, and homophobia you have become everything you hate by making such comments to a perfectly genuine question. Somewhat of a double standard i feel. I am so very disappointed in you.

To everybody wo was kind enough to answer this question in a genuine manner i thank you all so very much x

nice one, be ready for an ear bending when you get back to work. but just because you are not fit to work does not mean that you have to be at home in bed. when a doctor signs you off sick you cannot return work utill it has run out or you have been back to work to get a signing off note. you were well on the road to recovery and this was an occasion you did not want to miss

This does not sound like a sacking offence but if the doctor gave you a sick note you should not have returned to work even for party. I would say that the worst they can do is to give you written warning. That is in the legal sense but if they were wanting to get rid of you they could sack you and take the consequences i.e. you going to a tribunal and they having to pay you some compensation. If you are anxious to preserve your situation then you could go in on Monday and tell your manager that although you have sick note you feel much better (as you seem to do) and you can come back to work if they want you too. Either you have to go to work or they say no if the doctor says you should stay out then you must stay either way there is no disciplinary action they can really take

No, if your off sick they have to take your word for it that you arent well enough for work. Theres no harm, i have popped out for an hour or two when ive been ill without guilt because i knew i couldnt do a days work and would go insane if i was cooped up inside. You had a sick note anyhow so dont worry your doctor has confirmed you needed some time off, if they give you a hard time just be honest, say you wanted to see your colleague off and you felt well enough to leave the house for a while. They probably wont even mention it. x

I don't think that your employer will fire you,i was off work about three years ago and felt like having a few drinks so off I went just took my first sip ,who walks in but about eight people and a for-man, I felt really bad, I returned to work the next Monday fearing for the worst, nothing was even spoken of the night so I now feel that they had that much to drink them selfs that even if they did see me that they would prefer to forget about it

Hi there

This is a common problem . when you go back to work you will be questioned to why you were able to go to the bar and not able to go to work so make sure you have your facts straight.

They can invoke formal procedings if you have a poor absence record, this really depends upon the company, but as long as you have a doctors note then they cannot sack you for this one instance alone.

hope this helps.

Depends if you can convince them that you were not ill enough to work, but still saw the benefit in socialising!

After all the doctor signed you off sick, so that was not a lie, but legally I don't think you are allowed in the workplace when you are signed off.

just reading through this you sound scottish (if you are not sorry for the insult). The scots regard being off sick as an entitlement to their annual holidays. Reading your case, the use of "line" for "note" and taking regard of the negative attitude you have, I;ll bet your a scot.
