If you were out in the middle a small pond in a boat and you had a bunch of large bricks in the boat and you threw them overboard into the water, would the water level in the pond go up or down?

assume that the bricks do not absorb water and that they sink very quickly

All wrong so far!
This ? came up about a month ago and was interesting because it required some thought:

Since the bricks are more dense than the water, they sink and are partly supported by the bottom of the pond. This means they displace less weight of water than their own weight. As each brick is jettisoned, the boat displaces a lesser weight of water exactly equal to the brick weight.

The net result is that the pond level decreases.

The water level would remain the same since the weight of the bricks was included in the boat's displacement. The level of the pond would rise by the displacement level of the bricks if the boat were hauled out of the water.

I agree that the surface of the boat would displace more water with the bricks, there for when the bricks go into the water the smaller surface of the bricks will not displace as much water. I think the water level would decrease

Water level will go down.
When the bricks are in the boat the amount of water displaced by the bricks is equal to the weight of the bricks.
If the bricks were thrown to the water the amount of water displaced is equal to the volume of the bricks.
Since bricks are much denser than water, less water will be displaced in later case and level go down.Hope you got it.

depends on the displacement of the boat with and without the weight of the bricks Vs the displacement of the bricks area

I was about to agree with the 2nd answer: no change - that would have been wrong and I would have been embarrased. Before I got my reply in I saw 2 more replies and I now agree that the level will go down.
