We have found 50+ large and small diagonal holes in the lawn. We found them after two large cottonwood trees were cut.

CHIPMUNKS or GROUND SQUIRRELS!!!!!
If so, they're tuff to get rid of completely. We used a roto-tiller and tilled a large section real "deep" to try and damage all of the underground tunnels all along our back property line. We tilled in some of that liquid concentrated fox/wolf urine to help deter rodents. So far we've only seen one chipmunk ...but haven't noticed any holes in OUR yar. Hopefully, he's living in someone elses yard these days!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sounds like moles or gophers. You could try to put mothballs down the holes to get rid of the critters.
