Sad movie. Her mother used to abuse her horribly. If I remember she used disinfectant to abuse her in one of the horrible ways that her mom did. She developed the multiple personalities to deal with different situations.

her mother used to burn her skin with it.particularly in very sensitive areas.i read the book,it went into more detail than the movie.
