Tongues are a language spoken by the Holy Spirit thru you. A perfect prayer or praise to the Father. Our own personal prayers are sometimes selfish, or not worded as perfect as we want them. The Holy Spirit prays perfectly, with no other agenda than to praise the Father.

The apostle Paul likened speaking in tongues to bugles sounding indistinct calls for battle-- meaning speaking in tongues where no one would be able to understand them is meaningless. No true Chrisitans speak in tongues today, only those who are working through the Devil use this sort of distraction to build themselves up to stop people from discerning truth. Most of the time, the tongue beaing spoken is not even a language known by anyone on Earth, proof that it's origin is not of God, who conducts everything in an orderly, purposeful fashion.

At Pentecost when the Holy spirit appeared in small flames above the heads of the apostles gathered there, they were given the ability to speak fluently in all the languages of those gathered there and outside the building, a large crowd who had gathered to hear them. Thousands could understand what was being said in their native language, and thus, many were baptized into the faith and so, it spread far and wide because these men 'spoke in tongues!' The bible mentions that at Pentacost the Holy Spirit came and touched everyone there and afterwards they were able to speak so that everyone there could understand them. (to some it seemed like gibberesh but to others who were from foriegn places they understood) Since that time many sects of Christianity believe that one of the evidences (the primary evidence for most sects) of being filled with the Holy Spirit is the utterances of words in a language "not your own" this language could be a "natural" language (ie if you never have spoken Polish and suddenly you can) or a "spiritual" language (ie a language indescernable to everyone except GOD this is usually called a "prayer language") for all times "tongues" are spoken in public the bible calls for an interpretation to be given or else the tongue may be "false"

speaking in toungues refers to holding conversations with several ladies at the same time whilst admiring their tongues with your own.

speaking in tongue is someone speaking in a language that nobody understands . MOST young black people and MOST white people a.k.a. wanna be blacks do it
