My first job is paying me great, the hours are reasonable, and the people are nice. The only problem is that I'm still in high school while the people I work with are all college-age or older. Plus, my good friend (while we had a class together last year) is now a college student and he hired me on... but he's now my boss! It's a transition that's hard to adjust with to say the least, but I want to persevere...

The key is to do your job professionally to the best of your ability, dress appropriately, and let business be business. Leave personal relationships at home, and don't take work drama if any home and vice versa leave home drama at home. If you like the company and want to grow with them instead of it being a job, show them you are reliable, willing to go above and beyond, accept responsibility and show leadership.

Good question !!! You are smart beyond your high school age, and I can see why you got hired. What you have to do is remember that Shakespeare was right - "All the world's a stage...", and we have to play many roles in life.

To be successful at your job now, you have to play the professional role at work. Your friend is not your friend at work - HE'S YOUR BOSS and you must never let your friendship enter or play a part in your work environment. The less you talk about your friendship to other co-workers, the better.

Good Luck

Take advantage of this experience because you have a great advantage you're around older people with more experience and you can learn a lot. As far as your boss its tough to be friends with your boss. They will remind you if you cross the line even if you don't mean to. So at the office keep things as professional as possible, don't gossip about your co-workers just because you're friends and keep your focus on the job at hand. You'll do great!

I don't know what your job is but you sound happy there. If you are dealing with customers, remember that the customer is always right and to smile and be friendly. I am always grateful for someone who helps me in a friendly way. Show the college kids you can work hard and not whine about stuff. Jump in anywhere anyone needs help. These things will help you for your future jobs and school.

Just remember that at work he is not your friend; he's your boss. Don't expect any special treatment, but keep an eye out for him overcompensating by being more strict with you.

As for being successful, you're not in high school when you're at work, either. Dress appropriately for the position, don't chew gum, wear flip-flops, or be more concerned about text messages than focusing on your job (we just fired someone for that). Speak, work, and act like an adult.
