Have you ever noticed that when you're watching something on tv or at the movies, if one of the characters have to call someone, they always use the number 5? For example, they'll say, "this is such and such, please call me back at 555 555 9971", the second set of fives may not always be used, but the first set of fives are.

Yes, because it is acknowledged to be a fake number. If they used a real number, someone would be getting calls from people who picked up the number in the movie or TV show. Believe me; in the early days of TV they used real (random) numbers, and people complained. The 555 deal is now so old that most people know it is not a real number.

its because its fake. and five is the middle number of 1-10. they would just say that so prank callers dont call them and on the movies the actors/actress will dial a real number. not 555-555-9971.

Yes.

That's done on purpose because there is no real area code of 555. This would prevent anybody watching to really call the number and getting someone on the other end.

Yes. In any public media you have to prefix a phone number with 555 for legal puposes. That law was enforced because of Tommy Tutone's "867-5309 Jenny", where people who actually had that number received nonstop phone calls asking for Jenny!

They do that because nobody really has a phone number that starts with 555 so they aren't giving out peoples phone numbers.

555 is not a real area code, so thats why they use it, in case any stupid people try to call that number, it wont exist

they do that because they don't want to display a phone number that might be real...and I phone numbers that have 555 in the begining don't exist.
