That is the maximum number of cars that can do a lead lap[ on the shorter courses like Bristol or Richmond.

I believe it has to do with the size of the smallest track, which they can safely fit 43 pit stalls on a track such as martinsville and bristol. There was a time when there were as much as 50 -70 cars per race, but I think the 43 car rule was officially adopted in the 1990's. Also, the 43 spot is reserved for a past champion who failed to make it into the field due to slow qualifying speed.

But basically, the 43 car field was set for safety.

For the same reason Formula 1 doesn't allow more than 22 cars (24 from 2008). The regulations don't allow that.

If you want to find out why, see the sporting regulations for both F1 and nascar. I bet they say the same thing about the maxium limit.

For several years it depended on the size of the tracks.When they run on the 1/4 mile they run 26,1/2 mile 36, a mile and over 45.The 90's broght the standardization to 43 .

Because if they have to many it an cause more crashes and like the smaller tracks they dont want to many cars on it. I think.

It doesn't-that's just the number qualified to run.
More cars can be added every year, but there's probably a maximum.
