I didn't know I was Preganant and had smoked Marajuana about a week prior to going to the doctor. I found out I was 5 months preganant and now I worried about the drug test results. I haven't and won't smoke anymore but what does the state of california do if the test comes back dirty?

I am an OB nurse in California. Physicians typically do not do drug screens on pregnant woman without your consent or unless there is a probable cause to believe you may have done drugs.

Our hospital will do a tox screen on mom and baby's meconium at delivery without the patient's consent if certain conditions are met such as :late prenatal care, no prenatal care, homeless, obvious signs of drug use (track marks) or history of drug use (known or confessed by the mother) or if it is requested by the state, or by the mother herself.

Since you didn't get prenatal care until 5 months they may do one on you because most sane people would know they were pregnant and make a doctor's appt long before then.

The doctor will talk to you about the test results, tell you the risks you are taking by doing drugs or drinking, and ask if you will continue to use. They may also set you up with an intervention program to help you quit anything you may be doing, as well as a counselor to oversee/talk with you. If you continue to use, you may be reported for child abuse/neglegent care. Child Protective Services and/or social services will get involved. Your child may also be listed as "at risk" for developmental delays. I'm glad you haven't done any weed since, but you never know the damage you may have already done. I work at a preschool for children with disabilities, and while most of the children I see have a disability not caused by environments in the womb (such as Down Syndrome or cerebral palsy), some of the effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or drug dependency have the same negative effects on a child's development. Cognitive development (how the brain grows and functions) can be severely affected by maternal drug use. These children tend to be slower to develop their speech, have difficulty regulating their behavior, and may have problems with sleeping and develop ADHD-like symptoms of inattention and distractability.

Perhaps nothing, but there is always a chance DPS will get involved and you will be threatened with being charged an unfit parent. Then they will probably make you go to some kind of a parenting skills class, and one on drug abuse before they will drop it.

Yes, I will readily admit I have issues with the protective services division. I've seen too many times where they will take children out of the home for bogus reasons, and too many children returned into legitimately bad situations where they may wind up dead. (Not, not personal experience, I worked for law enforcement for 32 years.)

Are they doing a drug screen with preg tests these days? Is it automatic? As long as you dont do any more pot and it decreases from your system, shouldnt be to bad. For your childs sake I hope you dont need pot anymore. How did you get to be 5mo preg and not know? I have heard of this before, I knew before my missed mens.
I hear legislature is trying to pass a law you cant even smoke cigs in the car with your children inside.
I have no idea how strict people are. If you get into trouble enroll yourself into a program, this may help.
Good Luck and God Bless

I have never heard of having to take a drug test when you are pregnant. You are tested for levels of HCG, your blood type, and STDs. In fact, unless you consented to a drug test, you cannot be drug tested, as ruled by the Supreme Court in 2001. I wouldn't worry about the child being taken away, just concentrate on being healthy. (Too much worrying can be just as damaging.) Good luck.

Why do they do a drug screen? They will probably do another if it comes back dirty just to see if you are telling the truth about not smoking it again. FYI: Marajuana is illegal... best to stay away from it altogether.

When your 5 months pregnant they will usually won't urine test you except for once a month, and by then the weed will be out of your system. But if it does show up just explain to them, and you can prove to them that you won't be smoking any more of it, because your future urine tests will come up negitive.

Good Luck With your Baby!! Congradulations!!

I would not have an anxiety attack over this because they will probably just advise you to stop smoking the Marajuana. I think that they are looking for "harder" drugs like herion, cocaine, etc. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Why are you having a drug test? Depend on how much is in your system what your levels are. They most likely wouldnt do anything with low levels but im not sure. Best of luck

I would be more worried about the baby. There are some freakkkyyy birth defects that can develop if the mom OR dad smokes.

something about the marijuana breaks down chromosones and cause lack of limbs, just plain freaky lookin babes, and some serious diseases.
