It dipped to below 5 million but recently it was sitting at just about 5 million. Contrary to an earlier answer, it is not mostly Scottish - there are at least half a million English people living in Scotland and that's just one race (not that you would know it, step foot over the border and you are classed as a scot). Reason for falling population, constant emigration, utterly miserably cold and wet climate(that's just the summer).

Just over 5 million... main population growth in recent years via immigrant workers as the population was in a very slight decline due to reduced birth rate.

(FACT - not a racist comment before you P.C. nutters jump all over this) archive http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3486650.stm

.....even the dole sponging teenage mothers / lazy chavs looking for free housing could breed enough to make up for the natural decline.

There are just over 5 million in Scotland. But there are 25 million Scots worldwide. We are a race that seems to need to travel a lot.
Also the most inventive nation in the world.
Steam engines, marmalade, rubber tyres, tarmacadam, lee enfield rifle, television, penicillin, just to name a few things invented or discovered by Scots.
Also probably the most patriotic nation in the world.
So thank your lucky stars for us.

It is the number of men, women and children who live there!
The exact number varies due to daily births and deaths - immigration and emigration.
