Ladybird is the common name for ladybugs in most other English-speaking countries; they are not birds.
Are you CERTAIN it wasn't a hummingbird ? There are a couple of species. It's the only bird that can fly backwards...
How about a BUMBLE BEE ?
More detail on the colour and what it was doing ?

It definitely sounds like a June bug. We had a lot of them around the fruit trees in our back yard. The fruit came in late but it is all gone now and so our the bugs.

sounds like a very big bumble bee, may be the queen
if you are having problems with bees, killing the queen usually helps rid the problem
