It depends on what method you're using to listen..
Read this page, very informative: http://www.drspock.com/article/0,1510,9851,00.html
As for the gender:
"Even though studies are now reporting 100 percent accuracy in determining fetal gender between 11 to 16 weeks of gestation, in the average clinic situation, fetal gender identification is often not undertaken until at least 16 weeks, and is often not reliable until 20 to 24 weeks -- and this is when the baby cooperates fully!

The heartbeat can generally be heard around the 10th week with a doppler, a little later for heavier mothers. Before that, you can generally hear the swoosh of the placenta.
The sex can only be seen by ultrasound around the 20th week, but due to fear of law suits and fear of selective abortion, some clinics don't reveal the sex unless there is a medical reason, like incidence of hemophilia in male off-spring. Even then, an ultrasound gender reading is usually backed up by an amniocentisis.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and have a happy, healthy 9 months. When you are recovering from the birth (or want to prepare for afterward), be sure to visit my site http://www.babylune.com

I am 12 weeks pregnant. I didn't find out I was pregnant til I was 10 weeks along. But I heard the baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks and the lady that did the ultrasound told me that at 18 weeks you can tell if it's a boy or girl sometimes maybe earlier. They also told me that at 20 weeks I should beable to feel the baby moving. Good Luck

I had a sono at 9 1/2 weeks and saw the babies heartbeat, then heard it at 14 weeks. I am overweight so it took longer to hear it. I just went back last week at 19 weeks and found out it was a boy! Good luck and congrats!

I am 6 weeks also!!! I went to the Doctor Yesterday (9/1) and he could not hear my baby's heartbeat through the Doppler. He told me that it is still a little early and that every Pregnancy is different.

Well I first heard my baby's heartbeat at about 14 weeks but I'm not sure if that's the earliest. And I found out the sex at about 20weeks. :)
