I think either The Cure or Joy Division really started it. Joy Division is a bit more obscure than The Cure. Joy Division was out in the 70s and a little bit in the 80s, then in 1980, Ian Curtis, lead singer for Joy Division, committed suicide.

i love the Cure so i would have to say them but Siouxsie Sioux is still pretty cool. Cure's Robert Smith has been called the grandfather of Goth.
